Bethany Legacy Foundation will award a total of $350,000 for the playground in Dupont. The award is a base grant of $250,000 and an additional $100,000 as a dollar-for-dollar community match award. This investment is in partnership with the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County and the Women’s Giving Circle, a program at the Community Foundation. This also aligns with one fo the Women’s Giving Circle’s fields of interest, physical and mental health. The Community Foundation is excited to be a part of this citizen led effort, both as a funder and advisor.

The Dupont Playground effort is led by a group of volunteers who have been actively fundraising. Those volunteers, the Community Foundation, Women’s Giving Circle, and Bethany Legacy Foundation are asking the community to support the project to reach the community match goal of $100,000 to cover the total cost of the project. According to Dawn Jines, President of the Dupont Community Playground/Park Committee, there are several ways to take part in this matching grant opportunity. Individuals and/or organizations can make a general donation to the project or buy a brick for a sidewalk in the park. Bricks are $75 each and can be engraved with an individual or family name, or as a memorial to a loved one.

Another opportunity to give is to participate in or sponsor the ATV/Jeep/Motorcycel Benefit Ride on Saturday, June 17, 2023. Registration starts at the Dupont Firehouse at 11 a.m., with early registration available as well. Those who sponsor $100 in advance will have their name on the event t-shirt.

Residents can look for other opportunities to give and follow the progress of the park by joining the Dupont Community Playground/Park Facebook page.

###

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION CREATES ENDOWMENT TO BENEFIT HANOVER, INDIANA
Grants will be made for programs and projects serving Hanover residents

MADISON, IN – Last month, the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County, Inc. (CFMJC) designated $25,000 of its own money to establish the Hanover Community Endowment. This Field of Interest endowment was created to support programs and projects in Hanover in recognition of all the activity and energy currently in the town, and the Foundation wanted to provide a vehicle to sustain the great work being done now through perpetual financial resources for generations to come. An endowment fund is a vehicle for donors to fund what they care about forever. “Donors have been establishing funds at the Community Foundation for over 30 years, but we recognize that only a handful of those funds are specifically created to benefit Hanover residents,” stated Bill Barnes, CFMJC President & CEO. “Our Board of Directors wanted to take the lead on this new fund rather than waiting for someone to start it.” Grants from the Hanover Community Endowment will be awarded as part of the Foundation’s competitive grant cycle in response to applications from nonprofit organizations serving Hanover. Beneficiaries of grant awards from this fund could include 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organizations, Southwestern schools, churches providing a community service, and the Town of Hanover. “On behalf of the Hanover Town Council and our entire community, I extend much gratitude to the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County for their continuing support,” said Debbie Kroger, Hanover Town Council President. “The latest establishment of the Hanover Community Endowment demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment to the future of the Town of Hanover. For this, and all that the Foundation does for us, we are most grateful.”

As is the case with all the endowments at the Community Foundation, anyone can give in any amount at any time.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF MADISON & JEFFERSON COUNTY, INC. RECEIVES NATIONAL REGOGNITION
Local Organization Accredited with Rigorous Philanthropic Standards

MADISON, IN –The Community Foundation of Madison & Jefferson County, Inc. (CFMJC) recently received accreditation with the nation’s highest standard for philanthropic excellence. National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations® establish legal, ethical, effective practices for community foundations everywhere.

“Meeting the National Standards benchmarks is a rigorous, comprehensive process,” said Randy Royster, former board member of the Council on Foundations. “This accreditation is a significant accomplishment that indicates CFMJC demonstrates a commitment to transparency, quality, integrity and accountability as it carries out its mission.”

The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations® program requires community foundations to document their policies for donor services, investments, grantmaking and administration. With approximately 450 community foundations already actively accredited nationwide, and approximately 550 participating, the program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as to their legal and financial advisors.

“This is critically important to our donors,” said Bill Barnes, CFMJC President & CEO. “When people make a charitable bequest or establish a fund, they are putting their trust in us. They are counting on us to manage the investment wisely, honor their charitable wishes, and in some cases, provide lifetime income to a loved one. The National Standards accreditation says our house is in order.”

CFMJC works to meet critical community needs and support local causes, including supporting the arts, community development, preservation, and youth education and development, to name a few.

CFMJC offers a range of charitable funds, allowing donors to advance a cause, support an individual organization, provide flexible support for community needs or recommend individual grants. In addition to affirming the organization’s philanthropic services, the accreditation validates CFMJC’s grantmaking practices for the nonprofit community.

“Grantmaking is a lot like investing,” said Stephanie Withered, CFMJC Board Chair. “We need to assess risks, weigh potential gains, diversify assets, monitor performance and operate fairly. With our National Standards accreditation, you can be assured that we’re doing just that.”

National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations® is the first program of its kind for charitable foundations in the United States.

Established in 1991, the Community Foundation of Madison & Jefferson County, Inc. fulfills the mission of building a strong, vibrant community by helping donors provide perpetual funding for the people, projects, and passions of Jefferson County, Indiana.

The Community Foundations National Standards Board is a supporting organization of the Council on Foundations and is responsible for the quality, value and integrity of compliance with National Standards.
MADISON, Indiana – The Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Jefferson County – John Mitchell Adams of Madison Consolidated High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership, and are awarded a full tuition scholarship to the Indiana four-year college or university of their choice.

Mitchell plans to major in Sports Media and Broadcasting but is currently undecided on a college. He is the son of Troy and Kristy Adams of Madison. Among many accomplishments, Mitchell is ranked at the top of his class. He is involved in band, plays the piano and organ for local churches, is a member of the National Honor Society, and attended Hoosier Boys’ State. He works at WORX/WXGO Radio and is a commentator for the World Racing Network.

Upon learning of the award, Mitchell commented, “I am so grateful to the Community Foundation, Lilly Endowment, and everyone involved in this process. This has opened up a lot of new opportunities for me that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. I could not be more honored to have been selected and to have been a part of a great group of finalists.”

Five Jefferson County students ranked in the top ten percent of their classes were slected as finalists for the 2023 scholarship. In addition to Adams, the remaining finalists were Jordan DeAtley (Southwestern), Brady Jackson (Shawe Memorial), Kaitlyn Rutledge (Madison Consolidated), and Elijah Turner (Shawe Memorial). These four finalists will each receive a $1,500 Community Foundation Scholar Award from the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County for their efforts and achievements.

In determining Jefferson County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar finalists, consideration was given to strong academics, school and community involvement, and character by the review committee. Award nominees were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years. The scholarship is for undergraduate students on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment Inc. to ICI and Indiana Humanities.

Lilly Endowment Inc. created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Since 1991, the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County has worked to build a strong, vibrant community by helping donors provide perpetual funding for the people, projects, and passions of Jefferson County, Indiana.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons, Eli and J.K. Jr., through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff, and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education, and religion. The Endowment funds significant programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion. However, it maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana.

Since 1997, Independent Colleges of Indiana has administered the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program statewide with funding provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. Founded in 1948, ICI serves as the collective voice for the state’s 29 private, nonprofit colleges and universities. ICI institutions employ over 22,000 Hoosiers and generate a total local economic impact of over $5 billion annually. Students at ICI colleges have Indiana’s highest four-year, on-time graduation rates, and ICI institutions produce 30 percent of Indiana’s bachelor’s degrees while enrolling 20 percent of its undergraduates.

###

She was hired as the bookkeeper and to assist the late Ann Grahn, who was the Foundation’s first President & CEO. Louise was promoted to President & CEO in 1996 and remained in that position until her retirement in March 2010.

In her 18 year tenure, Louise helped to grow the Foundation as a local and regional leader. She saw the Foundation award its first grants and scholarships, navigated the organization through its first adoption and accreditation of National Standards, saw the creation of the Legacy Society, and led the Foundation through additional matching and grant opportunities from Lilly Endowment Inc. During her tenure, CFMJC also launched affiliate community foundations for Dearborn, Ripley, and Switzerland Counties, which are now their own stand alone organizations. Louise also had a passion to help convene the Hispanic/Latino Commission which led to the creation of La Casa Amiga in 2003. Even though the market decline in 2008 cancelled the annual competitive grant cycle, the Foundation offered the Help Your Neighbor grant program to help those charitable organizations that provided basic needs to area residents.

Following her retirement, Louise moved away from Jefferson County to be closer to family, but she held the community in high esteem in her memories. Because of that, her family decided to hold a Celebration of Life for her here in Madison and have designated that memorial contributions come to the Community Foundation. In honoring Louise, all memorial contributions will be placed into our largest Flexible Community Fund, the Jefferson County Enrichment Fund, to help address the greatest needs when they are needed most. To give an online memorial contribution, click HERE.

Thank you, Louise, for your dedicated service to the Community Foundation and the residents of Jefferson County. You will be greatly missed.

More information on Louise and her Celebration of Life: https://www.morgan-nay.com/obituary/louise-markel

MADISON, IN – The Community Foundation of Madison & Jefferson County (CFMJC) presented the Madison-Jefferson County Animal Shelter with a grant of $15,300 on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 for new fencing and runs. The new fencing and runs will allow the animals to exercise without the risk of venturing to the nearby road and improves the quality of their stay while at the shelter.

“We were able to make this significant contribution by utilizing grant dollars from three different types of endowment options available at the Foundation,” said Bill Barnes, CFMJC President & CEO. “We are grateful to the donors who established Donor Advised, Field of Interest, and Flexible Community Fund endowments with us.” The $15,300 grant was made possible by funding from the following five endowments at the Community Foundation: the Community Foundation Board Member & Alumni Fund, the Morgan Family Advised Fund, the Dr. John W. Petscher Memorial Endowment, Spirit’s Fund, and the Wallis Family Fund.
