COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW G1K PROGRAM COMPETITIVE GRANT CYCLE

MADISON, INDIANA – The Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County, Inc. (CFMJC) announces that the G1K Program Competitive Grant Cycle will be accepting submissions in the month of April. Online applications will be accepted from Wednesday, April 1, 2026, until Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 5pm. This is a new grant opportunity that will annually award one large-scale grant to one nonprofit organization that serves the residents of Jefferson County, Indiana.

This competitive grant is made possible by the charter memberships collected for the new G1K program. Submitted applications will be reviewed by an independent, non-G1K member committee, which will narrow the field to five finalists. The collective G1K membership will vote and determine the final recipient. There will be approximately $70,000 available for the grant award. The selected organization will have 3 years to spend/complete the grant project.

In order to apply, organizations must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Organization and its program must serve the residents of Jefferson County, Indiana

Organization must be an IRS recognized 501(c)3 charity or a 509(a) organization (schools, government, hospitals, churches)

Additional information about the grant cycle and the link to apply are available on the G1K program website at www.cfmjc.org/g1k/#G1Kgrants.

“I encourage the 501(c)3 and 509(a) organizations interested in applying to thoroughly review the information and eligibility for this specific process before submitting an application,” said Community Foundation Finance & Program Officer Kelly Miller, who oversees the G1K grants process. “Because this is a new grant opportunity, reviewing those items will help organizations determine if their project is a good fit for the grant dollars available. We are here and available to help applicants put their best foot forward.” Miller shared some tips when applying for grants:

Do not wait until the last minute to submit your application

Set a realistic timeline for and demonstrate sustainability of the project

Include the estimated number of Jefferson County, Indiana residents that will be served by the project

Break out the specific costs of the project: include pricing quotes and only show costs and data related to serving Jefferson County, Indiana

Make sure 100% of your Board of Directors contribute financially to your organization

Assets of the G1K program are held and maintained at CFMJC. Established in 1991 by a group of local volunteers, the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County, Inc. fulfills the mission of building a strong, vibrant community by helping donors provide perpetual funding for the people, projects, and passions of Jefferson County. In the past 35 years, the Community Foundation has reinvested over $20 million dollars into the community through grants and scholarships.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership, and are awarded a full tuition scholarship to the Indiana four-year college or university of their choice.

Jefferson County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship nominee is selected through a blind process, meaning that applicant identities are withheld from the review committee. Scoring consideration is given to strong academics, school and community involvement, character references, a timed essay, and a final interview. After narrowing the field of applicants, the nominee was submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Lilly plans to major in Business at Butler University and participate in the university’s Pre-Law Advising Program, hoping to pursue a career in Real Estate Law. I look forward to representing Madison and the Community Foundation at Butler University, both academically and on the swim team. I want to give a special thanks to everyone who has helped me get where I am today, including my supportive family, my dedicated teachers, my amazing friends and teammates, the Community Foundation, and most of all, God.”

Six Jefferson County students ranked in the top ten percent of their classes were selected as finalists for the 2026 scholarship. In addition to Canida, the remaining finalists were Brady Cook (Southwestern), Max Joseph (Southwestern), Braxton Lewis (Southwestern), Ellie Whitaker (Madison Consolidated), and Jamison Williams (Shawe Memorial). These five finalists will each receive a $1,500 Community Foundation Scholar Award from the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County for their efforts and achievements.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Scholars can also join the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment Inc. to ICI.

Since its inception in 1997-98, Lilly Endowment has supported this program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefitting over 5,400 Indiana students. The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are:

To raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana

To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play

To encourage and support Lilly Scholars’ engagement with Indiana leaders to improve the quality of life statewide

Since 1991, the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County has worked to build a strong, vibrant community by helping donors provide perpetual funding for the people, projects, and passions of Jefferson County, Indiana.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Receiving accreditation is a significant accomplishment that indicates CFMJC demonstrates a commitment to transparency, quality, integrity and accountability as it carries out its mission. With over 500 community foundations already accredited nationwide, the program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as to their legal and financial advisors.

“This is critically important to our donors,” said Bill Barnes, CFMJC President & CEO. “When people make a charitable bequest or establish a fund, they are putting their trust in us. They are counting on us to manage the investment wisely and honor their charitable wishes forever. The National Standards accreditation says our house is in order.”

CFMJC works to meet critical community needs and support local causes, including the arts, community development, preservation, and youth education and development, to name a few. This is achieved by offering a range of charitable funds allowing donors to advance a cause, support an individual organization, provide flexible support for community needs or recommend individual grants.
Grants of this size and nature are made possible by Flexible Community Funds. Flexible Community Funds give the Community Foundation Grants Committee and Board of Directors flexibility to address the ever-changing needs of Jefferson County’s residents.

“We are truly grateful for the support of the Community Foundation for their generous $100,000 pledge toward building a new EMS transport hub to strengthen emergency services in our community,” said NKDHF Director Rachel Sharpe.

The new, more strategically located EMS Transport Hub will include, with the classrooms and conference center for training, an expanded garage, upgraded technology, and improved quarters and facilities for the first responders.
