Helyn Bishop always had a special place in her heart for children and she dedicated much of her life to educating youth. She wanted to continue making an impact on the county’s children, so she established the Helyn Bishop Scholarship in 2004.
Helyn grew up in Canaan where her family, the Hamiltons, owned and operated an automobile agency and service shop. She received her bachelor’s degree from Hanover College and her master’s degree and principal’s certificate from Indiana University-Bloomington. She taught at several schools and then was the principal of Canaan Elementary for 15 years until her retirement. Helyn passed away in 2009.
The Helyn Bishop Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior of Madison Consolidated High School who demonstrates academic achievement, financial need, and has two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or counselors of MCHS.
