The Don R. Wallis Memorial Fund was established in 1992 by Don’s widow, Mary Goode Wallis. It is one of the oldest Flexible Community Funds at the Community Foundation.
Don served as the Publisher of The Madison Courier for 27 years until his passing in 1989. In a 1993 press release, Mrs. Wallis said she chose this type of fund because she felt it would be the most useful for the Foundation: “The board will know better than I what is most needed, and I trust the members to do what is good for the community.” Mary passed away in 2013 at the age of 101, but her generosity lives on.
Annual grants from this fund are utilized during the Foundation’s competitive grant cycle process and as needs in the community arise.
